NSCAA Coaches Corner: Shaping Midfielders and Forwards in the 4-4-2 [ Apr 24, 2012 ]

One of the focuses in the NSCAA Premier Diploma is systems of play.  These exercises help coaches to guide the forward and midfield unit into a proper shape in the attacking third of the field, working on good timing of check runs, entry passes and combination play.



Drill #1
Organization

Space – 70 yds long x 75 yds wide
Two forwards and four midfi elders with opposing goalkeeper.
Zone 30 yds from goal line – players not allowed to cross zone line
Coach has a supply of balls 70 yds from goal

Description of Exercise
A shadow play exercise to work on shaping the movement of the two forwards.
e.g. when the ball is played wide to 7, 9 and 10 move into space so that 7 can play
to 9 or bypass to 10.

Purpose of Exercise
To maximize the passing options into the front two.





Drill #2
Organization

Same as previous, with addition of two defenders to mark forwards: 5 and 6.

Description of Exercise
Midfield players pass the ball amongst themselves. Forwards move to get open, timing check
runs with midfield passes.

Purpose of Exercise
• To get forwards to time check to ball
• Help midfielders make quality passes and recognize running patterns with forwards
• Teach forwards to combine and score
