Five Long Island Teams Advance to Region I Semi-Finals [ Jul 04, 2011 ]

Though the competition got tougher on the final day of Pool Play at the Region I Championships on Sunday, five Long Island teams still advanced to the semi-final round. All five will play this morning for a chance to move on to the championship final in their respective age group in Lancaster, PA on Tuesday.

Albertson qualified three teams for the semis, beginning with the U12 girls, who defeated New Hampshire, 3-0 on Sunday. They face Connecticut at 8:30 this morning. Albertson’s U17 and U19 girls dominated their games on Sunday to head into the semi-final round undefeated in pool play. The 93 Fury will face Eastern Pennsylvania at 10 am, while the 91 Fury will battle Virginia at 8:30 this morning.

The girls of the Massapequa Crush earned a hard fought 1-1 tie against a very good Maryland Coyotes team to advance to today’s semi-final. They match up with Connecticut at 9:45 this morning. The only boys team to advance was the U14 Smithtown Arsenal. A 1-1 tie against New Jersey on Sunday was enough to help them advance to a game today against Vermont at 10:15.

Winners of today’s games advance to Tuesday’s championship games and a chance to earn a spot in the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Phoenix, AZ on July 26-31.
