It was just a single moment in a night that probably featured a hundred others like it. But it was the kind of moment that
makes you realize how impactful a night like the TOPSoccer Awards Dinner can be, and how important the program as a whole is to the children and families who participate in it.
A young girl who had just received her trophy with a huge smile lifted the award above her head and started jumping up and down. Then she spotted her mother and gave her the biggest hug a human body is capable of giving. It was the culmination of a great season and a feeling of great accomplishment.
This took place at the Long Island Junior Soccer League’s annual awards dinner for the special needs program on Friday night at the Huntington Hilton. Over 500 people were in attendance as the players received their trophies, soccer apparel, and other gifts.
“It’s so wonderful to see so many people here,” said one parent from Commack. “My son is so excited to be here. It’s great to see him so happy.”
Now in its’ 33rd year TOPSoccer has provided playing opportunities for children with mental and/or physical handicap conditions. The program was initiated to accommodate those children who are not able to participate in a regular or mainstream soccer activity.
Players take part in a Fall and Spring season, and there are several tournaments throughout the year as well. Families come together for a BBQ at the Peter C. Collins Soccer Park at the end of the Spring season, and a dinner like the one Friday night at the culmination of the Fall season.
The TOPSoccer Program continues to grow on Long Island with nearly 30 clubs now running teams under the watch of LIJSL TOPSoccer Chairperson Ann Marie Toth, teaching soccer and life skills that will be invaluable to these children down the road. The LIJSL would like to congratulate all the players and their parents, and thank the many volunteers for their countless hours of dedication to this wonderful program.
