Formed over 40 years ago as the Farmingdale Wolverines, the Farmingdale Soccer Club has grown to an organization of over
1,500 players, hosting teams for boys and girls from ages four to 18. It is thanks to the efforts of people like club founder, former long-standing club president, and LIJSL Hall of Famer Sal Gioeli, and current president Ralli Chadeayne, FSC has established itself as one of the top programs on Long Island both on and off the field.
As spectators enter Allen Park, where most of Farmingdale’s travel teams play their home games, it his hard to ignore the tradition of success that marks this program. Just past a plaque and small monument honoring Gioeli, who passed away this Spring, is a high fence bordering the soccer field, which is adorned with placards recognizing many State Cup and LI Cup championship teams from across the decades. On the field, current Farmingdale teams continue to honor that tradition with a high level of play and continued success, such as the GU14 United who advanced to the Region I championships this summer. Allen Park is also home to the renowned Farmingdale Hawks midget football league, but the presence of the Farmingdale Soccer Club is felt every bit as much here.
What’s nice
to see is the manner in which the club remembers those who helped grow the program into what it is today. There is the dedication to Gioeli, who’s name graces the main field at Allen Park. There is also the Ray Fettig Turkey Bowl, named after another long-time, dedicated volunteer and friend of Gioeli. This great event takes place around Thanksgiving every year, but is less about competitive soccer and more about giving back to the community and those in need. Through the first five years of existence, the Turkey Bowl has raised nearly $30,000 for local families and charities. This is just one of several ways the players and volunteers of the Farmingdale Soccer Club give back to this great community.
Finally, it was fitting that we visited Farmingdale on 9-11. This community, like many others, was hit hard by the attacks on the
World Trade Center in 2001. Among the Farmingdale residents lost were NYC Fire Chief Ray Downey. The town also lost Kathy Mazza that day, a captain in the Port Authority Police Department. One of the fields used by the FSC is dedicated to her memory.
We salute the Farmingdale Soccer Club for their successes on the field, and their dedication to their community off it.
