Petro Club Weeks: Lindenhurst Soccer Club [ May 21, 2012 ]

Back in the 1970’s, the vision of John Kennedy and Anthony Byrne led to the creation of the Lindenhurst Junior Squires Soccer League. All these years later, that vision is alive and well as nearly 650 youth from Lindenhurst and the surrounding communities continue to play soccer in step with the premise of the club’s motto, “Building Children, Character, and Commitment Through Soccer.”

When you talk to family and friends on the sidelines of the Lindenhurst fields, you get a real sense of ownership. Many of the current coaches and volunteers are former players in the league, and several even learned the game directly from Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Byrne. Now there is a real sense of pride in carrying on the tradition of the league and passing the torch to a younger generation of players on Suffolk’s south shore.

The good news is that the league continues to grow, serving nearly 650 children with a wide range of programs that cater to players from ages 4 to 18. From the Little Dawgs program for 4 year olds, through the intramural and interleague programs, to the highest levels of travel ball, the Lindenhurst Soccer Club continues to teach the game with a focus on skills and competition. The club offers regular training sessions on Thursdays and Sundays for their youngest players, right through age 8. They also organize referee training programs, and established a scholarship program for their senior players.

Touring the fields at the Lindy MS, Shore Road Park, Bower Elementary, and Venetian Shores, it seems that Kennedy and Byrne would be proud of what they built here. Likewise, there is a great appreciation from the current members of the community for that original vision that gave them a league they can continue to build on.
