Finals Sunday: 39 New LI Cup Champions

The youngsters hit the pitch at Stony Brook Soccer Complex on Sunday for Day Two of the 2014 LI Cup Finals.  On a beautiful, sunny Father’s Day, the Long Island Junior Soccer League crowned another 39 champions in the U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, and U14 age groups, and finished the day with the championship final of the GU16 Major division.

The younger age groups tend to bring more fans to the sidelines on Finals Weekend, and yesterday was no exception.  Huge crowds surrounded each of the fields, which made for an exciting atmosphere throughout the day.

“All of the teams and players competed so well,” said LI Cup Chairperson Holly Maresco.  “So much work goes into the entire tournament throughout the season and culminates with these finals, so it’s nice to have beautiful weather, and so many people here to support the efforts of all these players.  Our goal is to create a memorable experience for the kids, and I think we were able to do that again this year.”

Sunday’s finals competitions were a great representation of the league as a whole as 46 different clubs had a presence during the day, nearly half the total number of clubs.  Like Saturday, there were also very well-played, competitive one-goal games throughout the day.  The Dix Hills Attack and the Albertson Bulldogs competed in a very well-played 3-2 contest in the BU10 Intermediate A divison.  There was surprising talent in the Bay Shore-Brentwood BU8 game, including some stellar goaltending one wouldn’t expect from 8-year olds.  The same was true in the BU14 Minor division game where goalies from Oceanside and Lake Grove-Newfield stood on their heads in a tight 2-1 contest.  In the GU10 Intermediate B division there was an all-Sound Beach final as the Stars and the Fury represented their community with pride.

“At the end of the day, our league is about creating playing opportunities for all kids, of all ages and ability levels,” said Maresco.  “This tournament is the perfect culmination of our soccer year because it represents that philosophy.  I wish every team had a chance to make it to this event.  It’s such a great atmosphere.”

That doesn’t happen by accident.  There’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into building the largest single elimination soccer tournament in the world.

“This tournament would not happen without the efforts of so many volunteers,” Maresco added.  “To our committee, and the league office staff, and our officials, I can’t thank them enough.  They put in so much time and effort.  They are the ones who really make this work for the kids.”
