Merrick PAL Soccer & Soccer Band-Its LLC Join Forces for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

LIJSL

The National Breast Cancer Foundation's mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support ervices.   Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States.  1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.  According to The National Cancer Institute (NCI), getting a high-quality mammogram and having a clinical breast exam on a regular basis are the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early.  The National Cancer Institute recommends women age 40 and older receive annual mammogram screenings to provide early detection of breast cancer.  While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.  Additionally, with increased healthcare costs, many women simply cannot afford the cost of screening tests.  These women are at a significantly higher risk of dying from breast cancer if later diagnosed.  That’s why NBCF provides free mammograms to women in all 50 states through our network of hospitals.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and provides a platform to increase awareness of the disease.  In 1992, Evelyn Lauder, the daughter-in-law of the late Estee Lauder, and Self magazines Alexandra Penney launched the pink ribbon campaign, offering pink ribbons as subtle reminders to women who stopped at cosmetics counters in department stores that they needed to schedule breast exams.  Since that time, the color pink has become ubiquitous with breast cancer awareness.

This year, Merrick PAL Soccer and Soccer Band-Its LLC have joined forces in that fight.  Soccer Band-Its LLC, a locally owned and operated company providing custom soccer gear to clubs, trainers, and tournaments, will be providing pink-colored Shin Guard Band-Its to participating Merrick PAL travel soccer teams for the players to wear during every game in the month of October.  In turn, Soccer Band-Its LLC will donate $2.00 for every pair purchased by Merrick PAL Soccer players to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on behalf of Merrick PAL Soccer.
