March 05, 2015 | by Ken Ilchuk
Each month, US Youth Soccer will be recognizing one male and one female Soccer Player of the Month, presented by Olive Garden, whose accomplishments on and off the field stick out among the rest.
The players who are selected represent a balance of athletic achievement, sportsmanship and citizenship.
Examples of these athletes' characteristics include:
- Displays good sportsmanship and the promotion of teamwork
- Community service
- Superior academic achievement
- Overcoming personal obstacles
While great performances in the game of soccer are appreciated, it's important to note that accomplishments off the field are valued just as much as those achieved on the field.
This month's Female Player of the Month is Annemarie from Bellmore, N.Y. Annemarie is a hard-working and dedicated player who has been playing soccer since she was 4. She started as a freshman defender for her high school team, and helped her club team, South Merrick, capture the 2013 Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Premier League Championship. Annemarie is a team player who helps other to be at their best, and she also used the game of soccer to help causes outside of the sport.
She and her soccer team collected toys, books, clothes and donations for Hurricane Sandy relief, and her high school team raised more than $1,200 for breast cancer awareness. In addition to soccer, Annemarie also plays lacrosse, volleyball and track and field.
Congratulations Annemarie! The Long Island Junior Soccer League joins US Youth Soccer in saluting your efforts on and off the field!
