Massapequa's Father's Day Tournament Holds Fun And Development As Key Components
June 28, 2018
During Father’s Day weekend, Massapequa Soccer Club hosted a tournament for the youngest of soccer participants. Boys and girls from U5-U10 were able to play in a festival-type setting.
The tournament kicked off on Friday, June 15, with the U9-U10 age groups getting a chance to play under the lights at Burns Park. The following day, the U5-U8 age groups had their chance to take the field.
“The atmosphere was electric, as the players really enjoyed the under-the-lights experience in front of friends and family,” tournament director Jay Sherman told LIJSoccer.com.
He added about Saturday: “The fields were packed with players, families and friends, and Target was on location at Burns Park announcing the teams and players while adding to the festivities.”
During this year’s event, Target was a sponsor and had games for the kids as well as drinks, snacks, and other giveaways. Target’s mascot, Bullseye, was also on hand during the day.
The Father’s Day tournament, which had over 100 teams involved, is one of four tournaments that Massapequa hosts each year. Since the two-day event is for younger players, the competition is based more around development.
“The Father’s Day tournament is a developmental-based event charged with providing a positive and fun environment,” Sherman said. “It helps foster a love for the game, bonds with teammates and friends, and an all-around love of competition.
“The Massapequa Soccer Club hopes the event acts as a springboard for all players to continue to play, develop, and participate.”
