The first days of spring are here and that means the Long Island Cup, sponsored by Petro Home Services, is ready to get in full swing.
Around 1,400 teams will be competing in this year’s edition, which kicks off the weekend of Saturday, March 30, and Sunday, March 31.
“The start of the Long Island Cup is always an exciting time of the year,” LI Cup Chairperson Holly Maresco said. “We are looking forward to great play from our competing teams and would like to wish good luck to all players and coaches.”
The LI Cup is one of the largest single-elimination youth tournaments on the east coast as teams vie to be a Long Island Champion. Teams will play in four or five rounds of action, should they advance, depending on the size of their bracket. Some age groups have five to six flights to accommodate all of the participating teams within the 100 different LIJSL member clubs.
Starting this weekend, the LI Cup will run through June. Round 1 and 2 are played on dedicated LI Cup weekends with teams playing the same day as they would during league play. Teams that advance to Round 3 (weekend of May 11-12) and beyond would then play on their off day from their scheduled league games. The finals will take place the weekend of June 15-16 at the P-Lot Fields in Stony Brook.
